At a Glance
  • The Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter received its charter in 1914
  • The Metro Atlanta Chapter is the largest chapter in the Southeast and the seventh largest chapter in our Red Cross network of 700-plus chapters nationwide.
  • We carry out our Red Cross mission with approximately 60 full-time and 22 part-time employees, and the help of 1,000-plus registered volunteers, including a 33-member board of directors.
  • We serve 19 counties in metro Atlanta with a population of nearly 5 million.
  • We also provide regional support for seven Red Cross Community Chapters in Georgia: the Dalton-Whitfield, Murray, Northeast Georgia, Coosa Valley, East Georgia, Coweta, and Troup County-Valley Area chapters. (Our combined geographic territory in the northern third of the state stretches east to west from the Alabama to the South Carolina borders, and north to the Tennessee and North Carolina borders.)
  • The Metro Atlanta Chapter supports the efforts of the Blood Services Southern Region headquartered in Douglasville, Georgia, which collects processes and distributes life-saving blood to more than 130 hospitals in the state. (The Atlanta-Midtown Blood Donor Center is located in our chapter headquarters building.)

In FY 07-08
  • Your Metro Atlanta Red Cross responded to 817 locally funded disasters, 764 of them home and apartment fires, and six national disaster operations in Georgia, four of them tornadoes.
  • More families in metro Atlanta turned to the Red Cross for help following local disasters (1,915 families), than did families in cities of comparable size, including Detroit, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, Phoenix, Miami, Washington, D.C. and San Diego. We helped nearly 6,300 people with their emergency needs for food, clothing, shelter, health and mental health support and recovery guidance.
  • Our trained disaster volunteers continue to play a key role when catastrophes occur across the country. They donated more than 2,600 days to relief efforts nationwide.
  • The Chapter empowered nearly 50,000 people in the community and workplace to help save lives with training in first aid, CPR, use of an AED (automated external defibrillator), lifeguarding, water safety and babysitting.
  • Some 31,000 people attended Red Cross presentations on disaster and pandemic flu preparedness. Thousands more received practical guidance through literature, fairs and exhibits.
  • We served 3,600 military families who turned to the chapter for help with emergency messages, financial assistance, counseling and referrals.
