While the nation is better prepared for a major disaster than in 2005, more needs to be done


ATLANTA, Thursday, August 26, 2010 — Five years after an unforgettable hurricane season wreaked havoc on the Gulf Coast and brought thousands fleeing the storms to Georgia, the American Red Cross has released “Bringing Help, Bringing Hope,” a report that details the Red Cross response to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma and the ensuing years of recovery for the survivors.

ATLANTA: (March 23, 2010) - Metro Atlanta’s Red Cross put its disaster shelter plan to the test this past weekend in preparation for the 2010 severe weather season. The Red Cross conducted a shelter simulation, complete with a working kitchen and an array of Red Cross emergency response vehicles at Northlake Church of Christ (1625 Cooledge Rd, Tucker, GA 30084), during which volunteers got a practical review of shelter management following a major local disaster.

ATLANTA, September 30, 2009 – The American Red Cross continued providing support to affected residents in the Southeast as rain poured over the region on Saturday afternoon.

Johnie Chavours, who has spent the past few nights in a Red Cross shelter with her two sons, thanked volunteers on Saturday, saying, “Without you guys (the Red Cross), we would be out in the water floating, because that’s where we were, in the water floating. You guys gave us a place to lay our heads, you guys gave us shelter, and we thank you for that.”
